Best Midranges – Introduction

The value of the midrange disc is oft-overlooked in disc golf. But, a good mid can add so much value to your game.

a group of discs on the ground

You could make a very strong argument that if you were to play a one-disc round, you should go with a midrange. Personally, I don’t mind putting with them at all and I certainly feel more comfortable driving with them than I do a putter (which probably speaks to my game as well, but that’s neither here nor there).

To many, if you are going to have a complete bag that sets you up for success on the course, then you’ll need to have a few different midrange discs to fill different slots.

This is why we chose to categorize the discs.

Let’s find you a high quality, highly-rated midrange that fills a slot in your bag and lowers your scores on the course. Here we go!

Not to be confused with Approach Discs!

Quickly, just to clarify, I view approach discs are a whole other wonderful category.

I’m certain I’ll dedicate an entire post to approach discs, because that is another underappreciated category in disc golf that deserves it’s own time in the sunshine…

And that’s not to say I don’t use some of these mids for an approach shot or two either! I certainly do. Usually, for approaches, my mid will be on one end or the other of the stability spectrum.

With that in mind, let’s break a lot of this post into sections of midrange disc golf discs based on stability. But first, let’s start with the classics!

Best Classic Midrange Discs!

The following discs, as a way to kick us off with disc golf midranges, are your prototypical, classic, straight-flying, all-purpose, do-it-all, versatile midrange discs that are highly rated and definite candidates for the one-disc round!

The Discraft Buzzz!

Flight Numbers 5, 4, -1, 1 Average Rating 4.8 stars!

Recommended Plastics: Any Z-Line or ESP plastics

Other Notes: The Buzzz is the disc all other midranges measure against! It holds so many lines that you put it on and can take forehand or backhand throws with ease. Used by beginners and pros, you can’t go wrong with the Buzz!

Get The Buzzz! For a more beginner-friendly version, The Buzzz SS is great as well!

Check out The Buzzz on Amazon! (affiliate link)

The Buzzz!

The MVP Reactor!

Flight Numbers 5, 5, -.5, 1.5 Average Rating 4.86 stars!

Recommended Plastics: Eclipse 2.0 (best Glow in Disc Golf); Neutron; Proton.

Other Notes: The Reactor is another absolute workhorse that you can use for most shots on the course. It’s slightly more stable than the Buzzz (especially in Eclipse 2.0 plastic) but that’s not a bad thing to have in your bag as you progress. This is a fantastic, all-around disc, you’ll absolutely keep in the bag for life!

The Reactor!

The Axiom Hex!

Flight Numbers 5, 5, -1, 1 Average Rating 4.85 stars!

Recommended Plastics: Neutron, Proton, Eclipse 2.0 (Same Glow Plastic as MVP (Read: The best!))

Other Notes: The Hex is another absolute classic in the world of disc golf. It’s a do-it-all, one-disc-round, straight-if-you-need-it, hold-any-line type of disc. The Hex is a keeper which is why so many people rate it so highly and keep it in their bags for life!

Try The Hex!

Best Understable/Beginner-Friendly Midranges!

Understable mids can give you so many options on the course. They’re beginner-friendly and great for hyzerflips, turnovers, and shot-shaping around obstacles. They’re also great for long-distance bids on the basket!

Here are my favorites that are also very highly rated by other disc golfers as well! For even more like this, including discs that aren’t even midranges, check out this post on Best Beginner Discs that Stay in the Bag!

The TSA Mana!

Flight Ratings: 5, 5, -2, 1 Avg. Rating: 5.0 stars!

Notes: The Mana, from Thought Space Athletics (TSA), is an understable, gliding, versatile beauty of a disc! Hyzerflip to straight, turn it over or finesse it around obstacles. A definite One-disc round candidate!

Also Consider: Try it in TSA Glow (same as MVP’s Eclipse 2.0). Best Glow in the game! Note: Expect a slightly more stable flight in glow.

Check it out here!

The Mana!

The Discraft Meteor!

Flight Ratings: 5, 5, -3, 1 Avg. Rating: 4.72 stars!

Notes: The Meteor has a beautiful, turning flight to it. Release it on a slight hyzer and watch it gradually turn all the way to the finish! It’ll also hold some long anhyzer angles when you are in a jam!

Also Consider: ESP and Z-Lines (more stable) are great, premium options! Get it here!

The Meteor!

The MVP Uplink!

Flight Ratings: 5, 5, -3, .5 Avg. Rating: 4.87 stars!

Notes: The Uplink is great for all levels! This is a get-out-of-jail disc as well as a hyzer-flip, straight flying master!

Also Consider: Eclipse 2.0 plastic is best glow in the game but this and neutron will be slightly more stable.

Check it out here!

The Uplink!

The Mint Discs Lobster!

Flight Ratings: 5, 5, -3, 1 Avg. Rating: 4.7 stars!

Notes: The Lobster is a fun, lesser-known disc that holds any line you put it on and has a great hand feel to boot! Turnovers, Hyzerflips, finesse shots, straight flights. It does it all!

Also Consider: Both Apex and Sublime plastics are premium!

Check it out here!

The Lobster!

Best Neutral Midranges

This section is very similar to the classic midranges one listed above. Really, it’s an excuse to get even more all purpose, well-liked mids into the fold.

Here are a few more popular mids that are neutral stability and very versatile on the course!

The Prodigy M4!

Flight Ratings: 5, 5, -1, 1 Avg. Rating: 4.8 stars!

Notes: The M4 is a very forgiving disc that is good for players of all levels. It works for turnovers, hyzer-flips, straight shots, and plenty more.

Also Consider: Prodigy has very reasonable prices and often has x-outs that cut that cost even more! For more great prices check out this post on best disc golf discs and gear on a budget!

Check out The M4 here!

The M4!

The Wild Addax!

Flight Ratings: 5, 5, 0, 1 Avg. Rating: 5.0 stars!

Notes: I contemplated putting The Addax in the best mids you’ve never heard of section (later in the post) but I wanted to showcase it here instead. This is another amazing midrange that can handle all sorts of shots, has sneaky glide, and is also a great talking piece because most people haven’t heard of it either!

Also Consider: I like it in lava flare (pictured) or ozone.

Check it out here!

The Addax!

The TSA Pathfinder

Flight Numbers 5, 5, 0, 1 Average Rating 4.86 stars!

Recommended Plastics: Ethereal, Aura, Ethos and TSA Glow (Same Glow Plastic as MVP (Read: The best!))

Other Notes: The Pathfinder is laser beam straight with a hint of fade at the end of its flight. It also, in my opinion, as well as the opinion of others, has one of the best hand-feels in disc golf. Put it all together, and you’ve got yourself an amazing, all-purpose midrange to keep in your bag for your entire career!

The Pathfinder!

Best Stable to Slightly Overstable Midranges!

These discs are going to fly mostly straight, but can certainly handle some forehand flicks or a bit of headwind. At the end of their flights, expect a reliable fade.

Here are a few more midrange workhorses!

The RPM Kotoku!

Flight Ratings: 5, 5, 0, 2 Avg. Rating: 5.0 stars!

Notes: The Kotoku can handle a good amount of power and is very forgiving and reliable with the forehand as well. It has a nice reliable fade at the end and I find myself pulling this disc out for a variety of shots!

Also Consider: RPM has a surprisingly good price point considering it comes all the way from New Zealand. Atomic, Cosmic or Glow are all rock solid options for plastic.

Try The Kotoku!

The Kotoku!

White RPM Kotoku

The Lone Star Middy!

Flight Ratings: 5, 5, 0, 3 Avg. Rating: 4.65 stars!

Notes: The Middy is slightly less stable than the numbers suggest which is why it fits perfectly in this section. It’s forgiving and has a reliable straight flight with that nice fade at the end.

Also Consider: Bravo plastic is my favorite (gummy but durable) but Alpha and Glow are great choices too.

Check it out here!

Here’s The Middy (in Bravo) on Amazon! (affiliate link)

The Middy!

The Mint Discs Mustang!

Flight Ratings: 5, 5, 0, 2 Avg. Rating: 4.85 stars!

Notes: For those who know, The Mustang is a rock-solid workhorse of a midrange disc! It’s got a great hand feel and is incredibly reliable and has the versatility to handle a wide variety of shots.

Also Consider: Eternal plastic is durable and comes at a great price point!

Check it out here!

The Mustang!

Best Overstable Midranges!

These overstable midrange discs take the stability up a notch. They are wind fighters that can handle your forehand torque as well. You can pull off some nice flex shots with these bad boys too.

Like other mids on this page, these are highly rated as well.

The Innova Toro!

Flight Ratings: 4, 2, 1, 3 Avg. Rating: 5.0 stars!

Notes: If you watch disc golf coverage, you’ve probably seen Calvin Heimburg slinging The Toro around. That guy has a ton of power and he trusts it implicitly, forehand and backhand. Well, if it can handle what Calvin puts on it, it can certainly handle whatever I try to put on it. Maybe the same is true for you as well?

Also Consider: The Toro has a nice flat top to it!

Check it out Here!

Here’s a Champ Toro on Amazon! (affiliate link)

The Toro!

The DGA Quake!

Flight Ratings: 5, 3, 0, 3 Avg. Rating: 4.85 stars!

Notes: The Quake is a great all-purpose, forehand/backhand mid! Bend it around obstacles, flex it, throw it into headwinds, and more. It’s also got a nice flat top and a comfortable hand feel for however you want to throw it.

Also Consider: I like it in SP line but Pro line and Midnight Glow are excellent too!

The Quake!

The Clash Discs Mango!

Flight Ratings: 5, 4, 0, 4 Avg. Rating: 4.69 stars!

Notes: The Mango is not as overstable as the numbers suggest, but it’s no slouch either. It’s also, for those interested, a great disc for skipping around obstacles. And Clash plastics are some of the best in the game! You can find my review on Clash here.

Also Consider: I like it in Sunny, but you certainly can’t go wrong with Steady either!

Check it out here!

The Mango!

The MVP Deflector!

Flight Ratings: 5, 3.5, 0, 4 Avg. Rating: 4.75 stars!

Notes: Whether it’s power, torque or wind, The Deflector deflects! It pays these things no mind and guides your forehand or backhand shots on a rope before fading towards its target!

Also Consider: Great in many plastics but I prefer in Neutron!

Check it out here!

The Deflector!

Great VERY Overstable Midrange Discs!

These discs take overstability to an extreme. All I can say is good luck getting these discs to turn!

More likely, you will use these highly rated midrange discs as utility discs to get you out of tight spots. You can release these on some pretty steep anhyzer angles and trust they’ll come out rather quickly for some very tight S-turns!

The Yikun Crossbow!

Flight Ratings: 5, 1.5, .5, 4 Avg. Rating: 4.88 stars!

Notes: The Crossbow is not for the faint of heart! It’s also not what I reach for if I’m looking for any sort of distance or glide. No, this is what I grab when I need to rip a flex forehand around trees one way and watch it flip back over and fade to the basket the other way. Pure Grade-A Beef! And I absolutely love it!

Also Consider: It’s a great price point and I like it best in Phoenix line. For more great prices check out this post on best disc golf discs and gear on a budget!

Check out The Crossbow here!

The Crossbow!

Orange Yikun Crossbow

The Prodiscus Troija!

Flight Ratings: 5, 3, 1, 4 Avg. Rating: 5.0 stars!

Notes: All bow to the mighty Troija! This is the meatiest midrange on the market and I’m not sure it’s close. My written words cannot do it justice. Do yourself a favor and read the comments on this disc! And despite all the beef, people love it. That’s because it can do what others don’t even dare to dream of…

Also Consider: Get the premium plastic. If you’re going to be a bear, be a grizzly!

Check out The Troija!

The Troija!

Best Straight-Flying Midranges!

In order to distinguish these discs from the classics and the neutral sections, I went for laser-straight discs that finish forward.

I’ve thrown a ton of discs but also scoured a lot of comments and reddit pages (I see you) and here are some of the straight flyers midranges that keep coming up!

The Infinite Anubis!

Flight Ratings: 5, 5, 0, 0 Avg. Rating: 4.7 stars!

Notes: The Anubis feels great in the hand and flies straight right out of the hand as well. This beginner-friendly mid holds lots of lines and gets you where you need to go on the course!

Also Consider: Infinite has great price points on their own discs and usually lots of x-outs for an even lower rate. For more great prices check out this post on best disc golf discs and gear on a budget!

Check out The Anubis here!

The Anubis!

The Latitude 64 Fuse!

Flight Ratings: 5, 6, -1, 0 Avg. Rating: 4.83 stars!

Notes: The Fuse is more of a hyzer-flip to straight midrange, but once you have it on that line it’s an arrow shot. It’s great for tunnel shots in the woods. It’s also got glide like you read about and definitely made my best discs with high glide list as well.

Check it out here!

The Fuse!

pink latitude 64 fuse

The Millenium Aurora MS!

Flight Ratings: 4, 5, 0, 0 Avg. Rating: 4.71 stars!

Notes: The Aurora MS is stable, steady and straight! Not only is this 4-speed midrange laser straight, but it can hold all sorts of lines you put it on and get you out of some tight jams!

Also Consider: Millenium discs are usually found at a good price point.

Best Midranges with High Glide!

I have a post dedicated to discs with high glide, if you want to check it out. Some of these will overlap with that post and some are new. The bottom line is that these discs hover!

Here’s some great midrange discs with high glide for you!

The RPM Piwakawaka!

Flight Ratings: 6, 6, -3, 0 Avg. Rating: 5.0 stars!

Notes: The 6-speed, 6-glide Piwakawaka is more of a fairway/mid hybrid discs. When I did a review for RPM, I had a ton of fun throwing this beauty. Handle long gliding turnovers, but also hyzerflip it up and watch it soar dead straight!

Also Consider: I like it in Atomic but it’s great in Cosmic as well. Also comes at a surprisingly good price point all the way from New Zealand!

Check it out here!

The Piwakawaka!

The Westside Warship!

Flight Ratings: 5, 6, 0, 1 Avg. Rating: 4.54 stars!

Notes: The Warship, from Westside, is a hovering, gliding midrange that is probably better suited for intermediate players and above. Once you have your angles controlled you can manipulate this disc to get anywhere you want on the course!

The Warship!

Best Midrange Discs for Forehand!

A lot of the discs in the stable to overstable categories also fit as forehand discs. However, I have a few more for you that have very high flickability! Check them out!

The Emac Truth!

Flight Ratings: 5, 5, 0, 2 Avg. Rating: 4.7 stars!

Notes: The Emac Truth has a great hand feel for those who like to forehand mids. It’s got great overstability and surprisingly nice glide as well. It’s yet another do-it-all workhorse that disc golfers truly appreciate!

The Emac Truth!

The Kastaplast Jarn!

Flight Ratings: 4.5, 3, 0, 3 Avg. Rating: 4.93 stars!

Notes: The Jarn is an approach/mid hybrid that you’ll certainly appreciate! It’s got a low profile and a great hand feel that make it great for flicks as well. It can handle the torque too!

Also Consider: K1 plastic is one of the most revered in the game!

The Jarn!

Best Mids You’ve Probably Never Heard of!

Sometimes, we just like to be different. When others zig, you zag. I get that. But when it comes to equipment, it can be hard to turn a blind eye to the tried and true.

Well, this section has you covered. Be a little different, but keep the peace of mind that you’ve still got one of the best midrange discs in disc golf!

The Full Turn Beacon!

Flight Ratings: 5, 3, .5, 3 Avg. Rating: 5.0 stars!

Notes: The Beacon is a great overstable midrange that handles backhands and forehands with ease. This is a fun, trustworthy disc with low name recognition outside the Midwest!

Also Consider: Check out more reasonably priced Full Turn discs here!

Get The Beacon here!

The Beacon!

The Daredevil Moose!

Flight Ratings: 4, 5, 0, 2 Avg. Rating: 5.0 stars!

Notes: Unloose The Moose with confidence on the course! The Moose, with it’s microbead and appreciable glide, is a great disc to bag. It’s also got nice stability and is a very versatile, and lesser-known disc to bust out during your rounds!

Also Consider: Flex Performance is a durable plastic with nice grip.

Check out The Moose!

The Moose!

The Eurodisc Transition!

Flight Ratings: 5, 5, -2, 1 Avg. Rating: 5.0 stars!

Notes: I did a review of this newer European company which you can read here. Basically, their goal is to make all their high-quality discs out of 100% bioplastics (they’ve already done this with an ultimate frisbee) in the near future. In The Transition, you have a straight flying, easy glide, beginner-friendly, chain-seeking assassin!

Also Consider: Get it in their premium selection plastic for now!
