Ageless Disc Golf Starter Set for Beginners

The following page outlines a disc golf starter set for beginners that I believe has the potential to serve you for a long time in disc golf. Many discs eventually become useless as your game evolves. Come see how these 3 discs can grow with your game and stay in your bag for years to come!

My 3-disc starter set is not neatly packaged like this one (found here) from Innova!

By now, you have probably figured out that there are no guarantees in this world. So when I tell you the 3-disc starter set I’m about to propose is “ageless”, that same rule applies. No guarantees.

BUT, one thing I do promise you is that all 3 of these discs are still in my bag. Below, I have tried very hard to compile a disc golf starter set for beginners with 3 discs that will serve you at the start of your disc golf journey and be your trusted companions throughout. In a sea of thousands of discs, I hope you’ll agree that this is no small feat. That being said, I always welcome any suggestions/questions in the comments below.

Putter – Luna

They say that everyone should choose a putter that feels good in their hands. I disagree. Everyone should use a Luna… Obviously, I write that in jest (sort of).

I have tried a lot of putters and this one barrels right at the chains and then hangs on for dear life. It’s perfect for beginners and you could keep this in your bag for life!

Then, when you factor in that it’s an amazing approach disc that holds angles impeccably, it becomes a no-brainer. Don’t believe me? Check out the comments (and more info) here!

Try the Luna!

Midrange – Buzzz SS

Slightly less stable than the all-powerful Buzzz. This midrange is perfect for beginners and it’s one that you can bag for life. Personally, it might be my favorite disc.

The “mnemonic” for understanding SS is “So Straight” and that rings so true. It flies nice and straight but it can also hold some steep angles quite well as your shots get more advanced.

For durability, I recommend the z-plastic, but always go with what you like best. Check out the Buzzz SS here!

Driver – Leopard

In truth, it’s categorized as a fairway driver. But if you are a beginner, you really don’t want to be getting into the high speed stuff yet. There will be plenty of time for that later. This beginner-friendly driver is understable and is going to help you maximize your distance early as you are learning.

Then, as your game evolves, the Leopard can grow with you. Eventually, this disc can stay in your bag and become a roller.

For all these uses, I recommend the durable Champion plastic or the slightly less stable but still durable star plastic. Find out more about the Leopard here!

Look into the Leopard!

Honorable Mentions – Putters

Innova Aviar

You want to talk straight flight? The Aviar flies straight! Every disc has some sort of fade at the end, but I constantly have to remind myself that the Aviar’s fade is almost imperceptible.

Still, there’s something to be said about having a disc go where you aim it. With such consistency, this one can be a mainstay in anyone’s bag for many years.

I prefer Dx plastic for just putting, but if you want durability you may like the grip of the Star plastic. Check out the Aviar here!

The Warden

The Warden is another straight shooter! I like it a lot and a lot of people swear by it! It’s very beginner-friendly and can stay in the bag for years for straight shots through narrow gaps.

With a beadless rim, it has a nice feel in the hands that a lot of people (myself included) truly appreciate.

Honorable Mentions – Midrange

Innova Roc3

This one cuts harder than anything else you might find on this page. It finishes strong and is great for getting around obstacles blocking the basket.

How beginner-friendly it is, is up for debate, though many people think it’s great for a player of all levels (Calvin Heimburg regularly bags 3 of them!).

Whatever the case, I don’t think you’ll ever regret having a Roc3 in your bag. I have mine in star plastic and it has held up great. Check out the Roc3 here!

Rock the Roc3!

The Classic Buzzz

You could argue that I should have put this Buzzz in my big 3 (Instead of the slightly less stable Buzzz SS). It’s one of the most popular discs in the world and for good reason. It’s incredibly beginner friendly and is used by top pros as well.

If you are on the disc golf fast track than this might be your top midrange. It’s great with both forehands and backhands, and holds lines/angles for long distances.

To last the long haul, I like the Z-line plastic. Check out the Buzzz here!

Honorable mentions – Drivers

Latitude 64 River

With a glide rating of 7, it absolutely maxes out this category (Check out this flight ratings post for more info). It flies straight and consistent which means it’s good for players of all levels including beginners.

You just put a little into the throw and it goes forever. That makes this highly enticing to beginners. But let’s be honest, it’s highly enticing to all of us!

My only downside is that, at the time of this posting, it was out of stock. If that changes, let me know!

Discmania Essence

Bagged by many of the top pros, but still incredibly beginner friendly, this is the ultimate disc to grow into.

It’s nicely understable and will help correct all of our form flaws early. But as you gain experience you will be able to shape this disc to all sorts of lines that you can’t imagine doing with other discs.

Innova Valkyrie

This one is a classic and can be found in a lot of Innova’s starter kits.

It’s also got a little more speed than I typically recommend for a true beginner (speed 9).

Nevertheless, it’s still quite beginner friendly, but was also the disc used for the world distance record (it held said record for quite a while!)

I like star or champion plastic. Check it out here!

Go with the Valkyrie!

Beginner Discs That Age Well – In Summary

When compiling this list, I tried very hard to come up with discs that were incredibly friendly to the beginner but also incredibly valuable to players of all levels. That way, you don’t have to constantly buy new discs as your game evolves. I’m very satisfied with what I came up with, but that doesn’t mean everyone will be.

So let the debate begin! If you have suggestions for this list of discs that you think I should include, put them in the comments. Also, if you disagree with any of my selections, feel free to let me know that as well. Just do me a favor, and don’t call me an idiot (you can insinuate though).

Finally, if you are looking for starter kits that are neatly packaged, Infinite Discs has a variety for your consideration here.

So, what are you waiting for? Get yourself some starter discs that will serve you well on every step of your disc golf journey. Then, get out there with these trusty companions and let them fly!

Thanks for reading everyone! I really hope you found this post on my disc golf starter set for beginners to be helpful.
