FDR State Park Disc Golf Course Introduction

Having completely and totally caught the disc golf bug, of course I decided to bring down my entire bag, taking up precious real estate in the car, for a trip to my in-laws in New York in February.

I’m glad I did, because while Grandma was watching our son, I was off disc golf’n around!

Ultimately, I chose the highly rated FDR State Park Disc Golf Course and I was not disappointed!

This course has a really nice blend of woods and fields.

It also mixes the long holes with the shorter, more technical holes to good effect.

Though I will say, not being a bomber (yet!), some of those holes are mighty long!

And if you are looking for even more of a challenge, they have two levels for you to choose from, though the easier yellows provide ample challenge…

In the end, it’s a really fun, visually appealing and well-maintained course. I definitely recommend a visit!

Let’s look at some of the finer details below!

Signature Holes

These are just the opinion of the writer. With each course I like to showcase a few holes and explain what stuck out to me on that particular day. Then, I let the photos do the talking…

Hole 5 FDR State Park with trees and water
A downhill throw to a basket 5, with water in the backdrop, is definitely a signature hole!

Hole 1 – A nice, downhill shot over open field. This shot enters you into the wooded section of the course.

Hole 8 – This photo notes the bridges, hole signs, and tee pads at FDR!

Hole 9 – Almost the polar opposite of hole 1! After some lovely wooded holes, you drive out of the woods into the wide open fields!

Clear the woods and open fields await!

Hole 16 – A really nice sight line waits for you at hole 16. Pick your line and weave your disc through the trees. Then walk on the nicely mulched fairway to get your disc and hopefully collect your birdie!

Hole 16 is nicely maintained year round!

Ideas to Borrow for Future Course

Some day I would like to construct my own disc golf course. Come along for the ride and see if I do (Subscribe)! With each course, I play, I want to find some element that I appreciate and can use for a course I help create some day…

There’s a lot to like about FDR State Park Disc Golf Course in Yorktown Heights, New York.

They have a nice, well-maintained course, with great tee pads, nice benches, and plenty of signs leading the way.

For my own purposes, I like the blend they have of wooded course and fields. It’s got something for everyone, and I’d love to be able to pull that off some day as well!

19th Hole

After a round there is nothing better than going to a local establishment, having a beer (or whatever you want), some food, and talking about your round (or just disc golf in general). This section is always open to suggestions on where the best place to go after your round is…

two mugs of brown liquids
Relax and have a pint after your round. Get a bite to eat as well and feel free to let disc golf be the topic du jour!

I’m open to ideas, but Game Day Grille is the place I would go to after a round. It’s very highly rated, and has a low-key, friendly atmosphere that lends itself quite well to those of us in the disc golf community.

Course In Summary

In the end, I had a great experience at FDR State Park Disc Golf Course and I highly recommend it.

Having played in February, there are a few things I don’t know about yet. Though, since I liked it so much, I’m certain to play it again.

Does it ever get overly busy? What’s the poison ivy situation?

Also, I know this area has an issue with ticks, so I imagine there are some issues with that when the weather is warmer. (I do have a post on disc golf, ticks and Lyme Disease if you want to check it out. )

In general though, they put such great care into creating the tee pads, signs, fairways, etc. that I imagine those elements are kept in check as well as one could reasonably expect.

In the end, it’s a great course and it made for a lovely day of disc golf.
