Course review Introduction

For 20 years my family has split a home (aka camp) with another family up in the Sebago region of Maine. It’s a wonderful place and we’re lucky to be able to go up each summer. Unbeknownst to me for many years, it is also located near one of the hubs of disc golf in the state. And as it happens, this region is usually nationally ranked with regards to disc golf courses as well… Very lucky indeed!

This summer I’ve been able to try 3 courses in the area and Bittersweet Ridge Disc Golf Course is easily my favorite so far.

The first thing that stands out is the vibrancy of the community they’ve established. I rolled in at noon on a Monday and there were many cars filling the lot. This place is clearly a site where disc golfers congregate. And with two 18-hole courses (An easier “Sweet” and a more difficult “Bitter”) there is plenty of variety. Throw in the fact that it’s $8 to play for the entire day and I can see why so many players gravitate to this place.

In addition, there’s a nice looking shop and everyone I interacted with was extremely friendly/helpful. It may also be the best maintained course I’ve ever been to as well.

The course layout, while technical, is very thoughtful and deliberate. It has many holes that are designed to challenge your accuracy. At the same time, however, the distances are very reasonable, so even if you do hit a tree (inevitably?), you’re not devastatingly out of the hole.

All told, Bittersweet Ridge Disc Golf Course in North Yarmouth, Maine, is a great course to visit. If you’re lucky enough to live in the area year round, it’s also a wonderful course to call home.

Let’s take a closer look at some more particulars of this stellar course…

Signature Holes

These are just the opinion of the writer. With each course I like to showcase a few holes and explain what stuck out to me on that particular day. Then, I let the photos do the talking…

There’s a lot to like at Bittersweet Disc Golf Course in North Yarmouth, Maine.

I’ve only played the “Sweet” course so far. That means all of my photos will be represented accordingly. And while I’ll say that none of the holes took my breath away, I can say that I enjoyed each one individually. Soup to nuts, start to finish, you’ve got a great experience for each hole at Bittersweet Ridge Disc Golf Course.

Here are some of the signature holes as I saw them…

Hole 4 – This is one of many ace runs on the course. If you can navigate the trees you can give a good go at the basket!

Hole 4 is a short but technical ace run.

Hole 10 – You cannot see the basket from the tee box. Go up and over the ridge for a nice, technical downhill approach shot.

Hole 13 – This is another blind shot down a very steep hill, with lots of trees, to get to the basket… The second photo shows the view once you crest the hill

Ideas to Borrow for Future Course

Some day I would like to construct my own disc golf course. Come along for the ride and see if I do (Subscribe)! With each course, I play, I want to find some element that I appreciate and can use for a course I help create some day…

Is it a hot take to say that Mainers (people from Maine) take the best care of their disc golf courses? (Mainetenance? Ugh…)

Maybe it is a hot take. Let me know if you have a better state for it. All I know is that these courses are immaculate. I can’t help but think that part of the reason for this is that folks from Maine are extremely environmentally conscious.

buckets for trash and recycling at start of hole
Each hole has buckets for trash and recycling to keep the course clean. They also use wooden poles so you can sign and date when you ace!

At Bittersweet Ridge, however, they also make sure that you have every opportunity to put your trash in the appropriate receptacle. Having a barrel at the start of each hole is a great idea. You are setting people up for success and keeping the courses looking pristine at the same time.

One other idea that I like is very simple indeed. They have wooden poles holding up their signs. And because they have so many ace runs, they get a lot of aces. This allows players to sign the pole when they do get an ace. It’s a small thing but it adds to the fun of it. For my one ace, I had the opportunity to sign and I either forgot or didn’t have a permanent marker. Either way, I still regret it!

There are obviously many take-aways from this course, but those are the two I’ll focus on for today!

19th Hole

After a round there is nothing better than going to a local establishment, having a beer (or whatever you want), some food, and talking about your round (or just disc golf in general). This section is always open to suggestions on where the best place to go after your round is…

two mugs of brown liquids
Relax and have a pint after your round. Get a bite to eat as well and feel free to let disc golf be the topic du jour!

Mind you, I’m not from around here, so I am open to suggestions. But after a round or two (remember, for $8 you can play all day) at Bittersweet Ridge Disc Golf Course, how about a pint and some pub fare at Brickyard Hollow Brewing Company? They brew their own beer, have good reviews and are inexpensive. This is most likely where I’d go if I had time.

Another enticing option might be Gather. They have wood-fired pizza, craft cocktails, beer on tap and a cool table sharing layout. If you’re in a larger group and feeling a little fancy, this could be a nice spot as well!

Just heading in the direction of those two options will put you within range of a whole slew of places. Let me know if you find one that you like best…
