Best Lightweight Disc Golf Distance Drivers – An Introduction

Let’s be honest with ourselves for a moment. We want to throw the disc far.

And yes, yes, “drive for show and putt for dough,” and all of that but… We want to throw the disc far.

a man throwing a frisbee on a dirt road

Nobody is saying we won’t practice our putting and our upshots, or work on our form, but there is something inherent in most of us, that makes us simply want to throw the disc a country mile and have our friends marvel in it.

As we already said, we want to throw the disc far.

So, with that in mind, we have highlighted some great lightweight discs that should absolutely add some distance onto your drives.

We’ll lay them out based on your natural arm speeds/distances, and then you can hopefully find the right disc/discs to get you some extra distance you covet.

Let’s go!

Selecting Lightweight Discs On Infinite’s Website

I like Infinite because they have everything you could possibly need on a disc golf course. They carry a large inventory for you to choose from and they also make their own high-quality discs (some of which will be featured in this post).

Here’s how.

Step 1 – Choose a Disc

2 – Click “Select Your Disc”

3: Sort By “Weight-Low to High”

A Quick Note on Flight Characteristics – Beginners Please Read!

If you haven’t fully explored the massive depths of the iceberg that is disc golf, you may not fully appreciate the many variables that affect a disc’s flight.

Each manufacturer does their best to give you a feel for the disc’s flight characteristics based on the 4 flight numbers on the disc. You can read about those here.

For our purposes, we are going to focus on the idea of a disc’s stability. If you were to take a round Tupperware container lid and throw it as hard as you could, you wouldn’t expect it to go very far, despite its light weight? It would most likely flip over and dive bomb right into the ground. This means it lacks stability to withstand the forces you put on the Tupperware lid.

There are many factors that affect a disc’s stability, but one of them is certainly weight. In general, the lighter the disc, the less stable it is.

There are other factors that affect stability to. The type of plastic it’s made of, can greatly affect stability. In general, the cheaper the plastic the less stable it is as well.

Another factor is the speed of the disc. The higher speed discs are usually more stable.

Some instability in a disc can be a good thing. In fact, in order to get maximum distance on a drive you want some less stable turn for a full S-shaped flight.

So, with a lighter disc, the trick is finding the right balance of weight, disc speed and plastic in addition to the disc’s natural characteristics, so that you can max out your distance. That is what we aim to do!

If You Want to Go to a Specific Section…

We recommend you browse most or all of the sections (at least some of the ones close to your level). These can be pretty fluid and there’s a good chance there will be a nice big distance disc for you in here!

We broke down the post by arm speeds/distances. If you naturally fit into one of these categories we have some big distance suggestions!

How Light is Too Light? And Other FAQs.

Typically, the professionals, use discs that are closer to 175 grams. They put so much energy into the disc that they don’t need the lighter weights. Plus, the lighter weights can sacrifice some control for them.

So if 175 grams is typical, 165g is light, 155g is very light, and 145g or lower is extremely light. How light you go is up to you, but once you get into extremely light weights, the added distance might not be as pronounced and the lack of control over the disc probably will be!

In general, we might recommend lighter discs to fall in the 145g-165g range.

How much extra distance can i expect with a light disc?

As for the question of how much distance? That’s also quite variable, but the average added distance is usually an extra 30 – 50 feet. That’s nothing to sneeze at!

Is it legal to use lighter discs in PDGA sanctioned events?

The answer to that is yes! But as we said before, you may sacrifice control. The trick is finding the right weight disc for some extra pop without losing that control and not knowing where your disc will end up!

So, with that out of the way, let’s get some lighter discs into your hands and get you throwing for more distance!
