Course review Introduction
After waking up at 6am in our hotel room in Southern Connecticut after our first wedding in years, I knew I had some time to kill. The way my wife sleeps I knew I had A LOT of time to kill.
So, after a quick “disc golf near me” search, I set out for the highest ranked one that was closest to me. It just so happened to be the Rick Maynard Disc Golf Course at Bittner Park.
There was, of course, only one problem with my plan. I didn’t have any discs. I was just hoping I’d find one at the course and return it at the end of the round.
No such luck. But the experience did prompt me to write a post on having a disc golf go-bag at all times in your car. And because of this experience, I also stashed one in my wife’s car (she never has to know).
You would think, after waking up this early, and possibly having had a few drinks the night before, that having no discs would have ruined the experience.
But the truth is, I had a lovely time. After very quickly discarding the idea of a “mental round” (I lasted one shot and hit a tree), I just decided to walk the course and take it all in.
With a mystical fog, towering trees, barred owls calling and birds harmonizing, I quite enjoyed it. I was also able to appreciate the tremendous amount of work that the course designers have done (and are still doing).
From a scorecard/disc return bin at the entrance, to clear paths and good sightlines, it is very clear that great care was taken to create this course and make it enjoyable for golfers of varying levels (the higher level tee-boxes were still under construction).

Signature Holes at Rick maynard Disc Golf Course
These are just of the opinion of the writer. With each course I like to showcase a few holes and explain what stuck out to me on that particular day. Then, I let the photos do the talking…
I don’t think I’m alone when I say that I enjoy elevated tee shots. It’s fun to watch your disc glide, and I’ll take every instant of it that I can get. This course, though shorter, has a lot of fun elevated tee shots.
And as I mentioned before, it’s paths lead very clearly form hole to hole, with markers that reassure you along the way. The one exception to this is probably the 18th hole. It’s a good haul from 17th down the main path and you have to veer off to the right to find hole 18.
Let’s have a look at some of the signature holes…
Hole 1 – Uphill onto a large rock outcropping. Make sure you hit your putt! I would guess a miss can roll a long way!
Hole 10 – Runs along a babbling brook. At the basket you can see and hear a small waterfall in the distance…
Hole 12 – Most visually appealing shot from the tee-box.
Hole 13 – The basket is guarded by 4 imposing trees.
Ideas to Borrow for Future Course
Some day I would like to construct my own disc golf course. Come along for the ride and see if I do (Subscribe)! With each course, I play, I want to find some element that I appreciate and can use for a course I help create some day…
The Rick Maynard Disc Golf Course at Bittner Park has a lot to offer any course designer. I appreciated the carefully designed and well-maintained course.
I also enjoy the elevated tee-shots.
But if I had to take away one element it would be the sponsored signs for each hole. I’m sure it exists elsewhere but I thought it was clever from a fundraising perspective. I bet the business benefits over the long run as well.
On the 18th hole, I think they should put a sign for a good place to go and enjoy the 19th hole…
19th Hole
After a round there is nothing better than going to a local establishment, having a beer (or whatever you want), some food, and talking about your round (or just disc golf in general). This section is always open to suggestions on where the best place to go after your round is…
I don’t know the area at all. When I finished my round, it was only 8am so I doubt much was even open. All this is a way of saying that I’m open to suggestions afterwards. For now, I can say that I would have gone to KC’s pub for a beer, some comfort food and to talk/think about disc golf…
Course In Summary
I’m a fan of the Rick Maynard Disc Golf Course in Bittner Park. Everything at the park is high quality, and this course is no exception.
Whether it’s the appealing hole layouts, the well-thought-out design, the careful maintenance or more, this course will not let you down.
If you are in the area, be sure to give it a go. I think you will greatly enjoy your experience there. I know I did…
