Lone Star Beginner Disc Golf Discs – An Introduction

Lone Star figured out early that a disc golfer has to start somewhere.

In fact, their disc lineup evolved as their owners, the Dillard family, progressed in the sport as well. As they learned new shots, they created discs to accomplish those shots. But, like everybody else, they started at the beginning.

As such, they have quite the lineup of beginner-friendly discs that will accommodate players just starting in the sport or moving up the beginner ranks.

And as it just so happens, some of their beginner discs are so good that they’ll stay in your bag even if you rise to the professional ranks.

Lone Star Disc kindly sent us some discs, in various plastics, to try out. They have some excellent options for putters, midranges and drivers that we’ll showcase for you and recommend for players depending on their stage of development.

Let’s start with the putters and get some great Lone Star discs in your hands, so you can start your disc golf journey on the right foot. Let’s go!

Lone Star Disc’s Putter Lineup Has Great Beginner Options!

Lone Star sent us 3 different putters in a variety of plastics. All three of the putters they sent us are excellent. So really, it comes down to personal preference. Bead, depth, and plastic type are some of the considerations players consider when choosing a putter. Here’s a quick guide to some of the plastics you may consider for your putter.

Victor and Victor 2 Plastics – These are excellent putting plastics. They have a good tack to them in many different weather conditions and, as an added bonus, Victor Plastics Float in Water! Victor 2 is the firmer version of the two.

Delta 1 and Delta 2 Plastics – Delta plastics are also nice putting options but also might be great for someone who is considering using their putter for throwing and putting. This is a midgrade plastic with added stiffness/durability while still maintaining a nice grip similar to the Victor plastics. Delta 2 is the stiffer of the two options.

Alpha, Bravo, Founders and More! LSD describes their plastics well on this page of their website. Most likely, if you choose one of the other plastics for your putter, you are probably using that putter as a throwing putter or an approach disc. They are all high quality plastics.

The Penny Putter

Lone Star started off with a bang with their Penny Putter!

This beadless putter is versatile in that it can be used for lacing tight lines in the woods or grabbing chains while putting.

It has good stability and can handle power as your game progresses.

This is a do-it-all style putter that is great for players of all levels.

It’s beadless with with a mid-size depth, and is great for putting from circle 1 and circle 2. It’s also perfect for approach shots or for just throwing off the tee.

A lot of players really appreciate its versatility and that it can be a mainstay in your bag for years to come while taking the place of multiple discs as well.

This is disc is the first of multiple discs that made our post on best beginner disc golf discs that stay in the bag!

The Yellow Rose Putter

The Yellow Rose adds a little more depth and glide to the other putters we’ve covered.

And like those other putters, it’s excellent in so many facets of disc golf.

Hit lines off the tee. Use it on approach shots or all ranges of putts.

One of our testers liked it so much that it kicked one of their previous putters right out of the bag!

Lone Star Disc Beginner Midranges!

Lone Star Disc really brings it with their midrange game.

And similar to their beginner putter lineup, many of these discs will simply stay in your bag as your game progresses. The more you get to know a disc, the better you throw the disc. So the fact that these discs are so versatile can really do wonders for your scoring.

This first midrange is absolutely an example of a disc that can stay in your bag for life. Let’s take a look…

The Texas Ranger!

Flight Ratings: 5, 5, -1, 1

The Texas Ranger does it all!

It’s great for backhands and its slim profile also makes it very comfortable for forehand throwers.

This disc holds all sorts of angles and is great for straight shots as well.

It’s a true candidate for a 1-disc round!

The Lone Wolf

Light Blue Lone Wolf from Lone Star Disc

This disc, in our minds, is best suited for beginners just getting into the game.

For players with lower arm speeds the Lone Wolf has a nice amount of glide and an easy turn. It can also hold gliding anhyzer lines for players learning newer shot shapes.

And, as your arm speed grows, it could also become your first roller disc!

Lone Star Beginner Fairway Drivers!

If you are reading this as a beginner, you’ve probably heard the advice by now that you should steer clear of the high speed drivers until you’re more settled in the game.

We agree! And because of that, fairway and control drivers is where this post will end (But as you progress, don’t sleep on LSD’s Distance Drivers.)

Luckily, Lone Star Disc has A LOT of beginner friendly options for you. And like some of the other options we’ve mentioned, many of these discs can simply stay in your bag for life as you move up the disc golf ranks! Let’s take a look!

The Tex!

light blue lone star disc Tex fairway driver

Flight Ratings: 6, 5, -3, 1

This is another very beginner-friendly disc that has serious potential to stay in your bag for life.

As a classic beginner disc it’s nice an understable for easy distance in a very forgiving way.

As you progress in arm speeds, The Tex fills a very intriguing slot in even an intermediate player’s bag. This slot we speak of is the gliding, late-turning disc that helps you carve very specific lines.

An intermediate player can let go of this gem on hyzer, watch it flip up to flat and stay straight before continuing to turn late in the flight.

It’s a thing of beauty and we think players across many skill levels are going to appreciate this disc!

The Mockingbird!

White Lone Star Disc Mockingbird

Flight Ratings: 7, 5, -2, 1

The Mockingbird is another hyzer-flip, gliding beauty of a disc!

As is the case with many other discs in this post, The Mockingbird is very forgiving. You don’t need to hit perfect angles in order to get good results with it.

Beginners will get consistent easy distance and The Mockingbird could end up being a beginners best distance disc for quite some time.

As you progress, however, hyzer-flip this disc to straight, watch it effortlessly glide and pan to the right (left for lefties) before kicking into a reliable fade.

Also note, a lot of players really appreciated this disc in glow. We like LSD’s Bravo Glow best of all! We highlight it (as well as the Guadalupe) in our best glow discs post.

The Desperado

Red Lone Star Disc Desperado

Flight Ratings: 9, 5, -2, 1

The Desperado is one of the newer additions to the Lone Star lineup and we can see why they added it!

This is a hyzer-flip for effortless distance machine.

It doesn’t take much to get it going and we agree that many beginners will love bagging it and growing with it as their game progresses!

The Tumbleweed!

Blue Lone Star Tumbleweed

Flight Ratings: 10, 6, -4, 1

Is the Tumbleweed technically a distance driver? Yes.

But this distance driver is considerably understable and a strong option for easy distance for beginners that are approaching that intermediate classification.

And as you progress, this disc can do some pretty impressive things in the air. It can take on some interesting angles for long panning shot shapes that help players get out of trouble.

It also has some great glow options for your night rounds. It’s an all-around impressive and fun disc!
