DD Commander Cooler Bag – An Introduction
There was a mid-90’s beer commercial where people on the couch wanted to watch different shows and couldn’t decide on which one to go with. So, they tapped the tv with the beer and said “let’s watch both” and suddenly both shows melded together into one show of absolute lunacy.
It took me a while to actually remember it and then find it, but here’s an example.
You could call it “best of both worlds” or “having your cake and eating it too”.
And that’s how I feel about the DD Commander Cooler Bag. On it’s own, it’s a great, comfortable, highly rated disc golf bag that has everything you need and more. But then, for those hot days (or any day really) it also comes with a cooler bag insert so you can keep your drinks cold on the course AND comfortably carry a bunch of discs and your belongings around.

How many discs does it hold with and without the cooler insert? How effective is the cooler? Is it durable? etc. Let’s get into all of it.
To start, like the regular Commander, if you take the insert out, it can hold over 20 discs in the main compartment. But it also has vertical and side pockets so you can fit about 8 more discs as well as your mini marker.
If you put the cooler in, you are still looking at 10-12 discs in the main compartment and another 8 in the vertical and side pockets. So, even with the cooler you are able to carry 16-20 discs which is more than enough for a casual round.
The cooler itself holds 6 cans but you can comfortably fit taller 16 ounce cans as well. Personally, I like 12 ounce cans so I can fit more ice packs.
The bag also has two insulated water bottle holders and two zipper pockets for valuables. It comes with small feet to keep it directly off the ground, and unlike other cooler bags we’ve tried, it does not tip.
And with the extra weight you’d carry with all the discs/drinks, it’s shoulder straps are padded really well for a comfortable experience.
All told, this is a well-thought-out disc golf bag!

Getting Max Coolness With Your DD Commander Cooler Bag
I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeves when it comes to this bag. And if you like cold drinks as much as I do, you’ll like this one a lot.
We’ve already established that the cooler insert is removable. Here’s the trick. The night before your round, put the insert in the freezer (and obviously your drinks in the fridge). This, along with an ice pack, keeps those drinks frosty for your entire round!
Note: Don’t fold the insert. It has to keep it’s shape because it gets stiff when frozen.
Then, just reattach, add drinks and ice pack and you are good to go!
