Best Floating Discs – Introduction
I’ve been around the sport of disc golf a fair amount at this point. And do you know what I don’t see? Disc golfers that choose to throw floating discs when there isn’t a water hazard.
I haven’t met one.
That doesn’t mean they don’t exist, but I think it’s valuable to bring up so we can manage expectations.
I wouldn’t buy a floating disc with the expectation that it’s going to be your go-to, everyday disc.
Instead, I would buy a floating disc so that you can throw it with confidence over or near water hazards.
Then, you will have a little peace of mind when throwing over water and you won’t have to worry about losing your favorite discs (that usually don’t float) in the process.
So, with that in mind, let’s look at the best disc golf discs that I’ve found that float in water.
My Floating Disc Rankings!
When I made these rankings I basically asked myself the following question:
Which disc can I consistently throw up to 200 feet over a water hazard?
The main thing I looked for was consistency of flight.
When you’re throwing over water, you want to be reasonably sure you know where the disc will go.
So, without further ado, I present my disc golf floating disc rankings in reverse order!
#6 – The Innova Wahoo
Flight Rating: 12, 5, -2, 2
A lot of floating discs are a lot lighter and less stable than their numbers suggest. The Wahoo is made from a tacky material that floats and can weigh as much as a typical disc.
My only issue with it is the consistency of flight. I don’t feel confident where it’s going to go. But some people swear by the Wahoo and you can check it out here.

#5 – The Innova Dragon
Flight Rating: 8, 5, -2, 2
The Dragon is another control driver that floats. If you catch it right (usually hyzer-flip it’ll glide for a good ways and come down safely on the other side of the water.
If you catch it wrong, it floats.
If you are interested, people have a lot to say about the Dragon so you can read for yourself here and decide if it’s a good fit for your bag!

The Dragon!
#4 – The Contrail
Flight Rating: 6, 5, 0, 2
The Contrail, from Guru, is not your typical disc. It is light and flimsy and does not feel like you are throwing anything you are used to in disc golf.
That being said, it is not too understable like other floating discs, and can handle a good amount of power. It is also quite user-friendly for children (read: it doesn’t hurt nearly as much to get hit by one). All in all, an interesting and fun disc that also floats!
Check it out here!
The Contrail
#3 – The Discmania Mermaid
Flight Rating: 7, 4, -1, 2
The Mermaid is Discmania’s first foray into the world of floating discs and they have done quite well. It has a good grip, it can handle power and has a nice consistent flight with some turn but not too much.
It’s a really solid choice to have as your floating disc. Find the Mermaid here!

The Mermaid
#2 – The Yikun Zhu!
Flight Rating: 7, 5, 0, 2
The Zhu is another light-weight floating disc. It is not quite as stable as the numbers suggest (Maybe -1.5 turn?). It’s got a nice feel in the hand and the “Swift” plastic has a nice tack to it.
The reason it makes it all the way to second on the list is that I can get this disc to carry farthest more consistently than the discs listed above. Check out the Zhu here!

#1 – The Millenium Aquarius!
Flight Rating: 8, 5, -3, 2
Of the discs on this list, Aquarius is the only one I would actually consider using for everyday use. Release it on hyzer and watch it flip up and carry for effortless distance.
Aquarius is less stable than the previous two discs and I only avoid using it into headwinds. Otherwise, this is my go-to disc for longer water carries. Get it here!

Best Disc Golf Discs That Float – In Summary
In my opinion, if you are buying a floating disc, you are buying a disc that you can throw with confidence over a water hazard.
For most shots that are unrelated to water, there are so many other options you can reach for.
And because these discs float, you don’t have to worry about losing some of your more favored discs at the bottom of a pond. This keeps your favorite disc where it belongs in your bag. And because your disc isn’t sitting at the bottom of a pond, it’s more eco-friendly as well!
So, when you arrive at a disc golf course with water holes, be sure to put a floating disc in your bag. The peace of mind alone and confidence it gives you is well worth it!
Then you can relax and have some care-free throws over water. And like your discs, you can watch your stress just float away.
