Discs For Kids – Introduction
So many of us have fallen in love with disc golf in our own lives and it’s only natural that we want the same for our kids.
After all, it’s an amazing sport with amazing people.
And when you think about the reasoning so many people give for why they got hooked, usually somewhere on the list is this:
They fell in love with the flight of the disc.
Sound familiar? I’ve heard it more times than I can count.
And if adults are saying this, then it stands to reason that kids will also be susceptible to the beautiful flights found in our game.
For this reason, it is well worth it to get discs that are designed specifically for children.
That way kids can find the same joy in flight that we also have found. First let’s look into other considerations then we’ll outline the best disc golf discs for kids.
Considerations When Selecting Discs for Kids
Here are some things to think about when choosing a disc for your kids.
Ease of Throwing: Watch that Disc Soar!
We’ve already talked about this. In my opinion, the best way to get your kid into disc golf is to have them find success early. And like most of us, they are going to want to see that thing fly.
The discs below will allow them to get big distance with ease!
Safety
Want to know a way for a kid to quickly lose interest in disc golf? It happens when they accidentally get hit with these big heavy/hard discs (even with short distances like putting).
Naturally, the discs on this list are lighter so they’ll already hurt far less.
But some of them are also made of some soft extra soft material.
Just another added layer to ensure less pain should the kid (or adult) accidentally get hit!
Other Uses: Does it Float or Serve Another Purpose?
For this list I wondered if there was another use for the disc once your child got older?
Luckily, the answer was yes!
And the answer lies in how they react when they land in water! Because these discs are lighter, many of them float in water.
I have created a list of best disc golf discs that float in water, and some of the discs below are on that list as well.
I think it’s always a good idea to have a floating disc for courses with water hazards and the disc your kid uses for big distance can later convert to their disc for water carries too!
A Great Disc to Get/Keep Your Child Interested in Disc Golf!
One day on vacation in Maine, I happened into this storage shed to see if there was anything I could use to entertain my 3-year old.
And did I strike gold!
I found a disc, that’s made for dogs, but it floats, is super soft, is light and easy to throw, and is also stable enough that I could throw comfortably throw it with power. I could even flick it forehand without it burning over!
ChuckIt! Paraflight Dog Toy!
Very Soft – I wasn’t nearly as worried about the disc hitting my kid.
