HIAARO Portable Disc Golf Travel Basket – Introduction

What is that you look for in a portable disc golf basket?

Is it the ease of getting it into your car and transporting it to the field? Is it the basket’s ability to catch discs when you are practice putting?

Maybe it’s the basket’s durability? You certainly don’t want it breaking down after a limited amount of use.

And what about the price? This may not even be your main practice basket so you don’t want it to cost a fortune.

For me, I want all of the above. I want to be able to pack my travel basket in my car with ease, bring it to the field, get some great practice in, both putting and throwing, and pack it up without it feeling like a massive chore… Oh, and I want it to last without it costing a ton.

Well, I’ve been using this HIAARO portable travel basket for many months and I really think it’s a very strong option for disc golfers that are looking to add a travel basket to their arsenal. It is PDGA certified, checks a lot of the boxes and even has a few added bonuses (which I’ll get to) as well.

Let’s check this basket out and see if it’s as great fit for you as it was for me!

Pluses to the HIAARO Portable Travel Disc Golf Basket!

I mentioned some of these in the introduction but there really is a lot to like about this basket from HIARRO.

Let’s take a closer look.

It’s Durable!

This basket is made from some hardy materials! I’ve been using it for quite some time now and running it through a battery of tests. I throw it in the back of my car, assemble it, throw at it, putt with it, pack it back up and repeat.

After all of it, it still looks like new to me. I’m sure, like anything else, it’ll wear over time, but this is made from thick and hardy materials that are designed to last!

I bring mine in and store it in my garage after each use, but it should be noted that it is made of UV resistant and rust resistant materials.

This lends itself well to the next upside as well.

It’s a Great Price Point!

With all the aforementioned accolades, you would expect this basket to be 50% more costly. Therein lies the true appeal of the HIAARO Portable Disc Golf Travel Basket.

It comes at a very competitive price. The other quality baskets from name brand companies are going to cost you significantly more.

The less expensive baskets are going to sacrifice quality significantly.

This basket toes the line and gives you quality at a very reasonable price point.

Really Good for Practice Putting!

Some of the less expensive travel baskets are not great for putting. This one is!

I would say it catches 90-95% of the putts that a typical basket would catch. That’s not bad for a travel basket!

And, as an added bonus, the chain sound is not nearly as loud as your typical basket is. I know you like that sound. Me too! But do you know who doesn’t? Your neighbor when you are putting for an hour at 9pm at night. Or what about your kid that is trying to sleep?

I’ve now completely made this basket my “Night Putting” basket. It has half the “clang” and grabs those putts with a high degree of certainty!

Weight and Travel Capacity!

This is light weight and easy to toss in a car and go.

I don’t have a particularly large vehicle. And I already told you that I don’t usually bother putting these baskets in their bags (though it does fit perfectly well).

For me, personally, I break the basket into 2 parts (easy to do), fold it up as it is designed to do, lay it in my trunk, drive to the field, carry and reassemble.

And because it is significantly lighter (14.6 pounds vs. 28 – 34 pounds for typical portable baskets), it is far easier to move it around the field.

I also think, because of the ease of mobility, it makes it far more likely that you’ll actually take it to a field and get that valuable practice in the first place!

Easy to Assemble!

This basket takes 10- 20 minutes to assemble from scratch. After that, if you want to take it apart to load in your car, it takes less than 2 or 3.

It’s easy to put together and easy to set up. It even comes with stakes that you can use to pin it to the ground if you mount it on a slope or something. These stakes even have their own slot in the carrying bag. The folks at HIAARO have thought of a lot when they designed their portable disc golf travel basket!

This easy assembly also keeps the barrier to take it to the field very low. A nice upside if you ask me…

You May Want to Know…

Right off, let me tell you this: Nothing listed below is going to prevent me from buying the HIAARO Portable Disc Golf Travel Basket. There is just too much upside…

That being said, no basket will ever be perfect.

I will always lay out what I find, so that you can decide if the basket is a good fit for you.

Here’s what you might want to consider:

Weight – This basket is much lighter than your typical portable basket with the round base. I like it because it’s far easier to travel with, but some people might prefer a heavier model for their situations. Part of the reduced weight comes from the next observation.

Slightly Reduced Disc Catching – The chains on this basket are far different from the chains on a typical basket that might have 24 “heavy duty” chains. The chains are where a bulk of the weight comes from on a basket. Therefore, with less heavy chains, it stands to reason that this basket will catch less. I estimate that it still catches 90 – 95% of what a typical basket would. To me, given all the upside this basket presents, that is more than fair in terms of trade-off.

Fitting it back in the bag – Isn’t this true of nearly all items that come with carrying bags? It is for me! So this is probably a me problem. In general, I don’t even bother with bags for this type of thing. Cramming things into bags is just extra time I could be playing disc golf. The bag, for those of you that like a good carrying case, has many slots for all the fixings that come with the bag and is very durable as well!

Slightly Enlarged Size – By my measurements, and by my eye, this basket is slightly larger than your standard disc golf basket (1 – 2 inches bigger in diameter, depending on which basket you compare it to). This doesn’t bother me, and perhaps with the slightly reduced catching ability, it all comes out in the wash! And remember it is PDGA approved! But if you are the type of person that likes a slightly smaller target, it’s a good thing to be aware of.

That’s it. Now, let me share a bonus feature I found…

Bonus Feature! My Personal Favorite!

Until I received the HIAARO Portable Disc Golf Travel Basket in the mail, I had only used classic course baskets and portable baskets.

But there is one major benefit, that I have absolutely loved about this one. It is A LOT less noisy.

This was referenced above, but it bears repeating. I have small kids and I, like most of you, have neighbors. I also love to putt in the back yard. Now I don’t mind putting at night after the kids have gone to bed. This basket is far less disturbing to others and it allows me to enjoy the night and focus on my putting.

Now, when it’s time to putt even later in the evening, I don’t even hesitate to grab this basket and head out to the back yard and putt with the peace of mind that I’m not bothering my neighbors or waking my kids!

What Else Does HIAARO Offer?

HIAARO is committing to disc golf in a big way! They have lots of offerings. HIAARO sent me the following products to review and I like what they are doing! Let’s take a look…

Disc Golf Basket Lights!

In addition to their disc golf basket, HIAARO sent me some other fun pieces that go well with their baskets as well.

Remember how I told you that I like to practice my putting at night? Well, I think HIAARO had night disc golf in mind as well. They have a few glow features that make night golf all the more attainable when it’s dark. Check these out!

Basket Lights – I’ve been enjoying these lights while I practice putt at night. Gone are the days where I have to walk into the motion sensor’s path so I can see where I’m putting. Now, I attach these to the baskets (they’re magnetic), use the remote (comes with lights) to set the color/rhythm (there are many color options and different pulses (flashing, fading, etc.)) and I begin.

There is also a sleep timer on these as well. If, for whatever reason, you can’t turn them off, you can set them on a timer (for 2, 4, or 6 hours) and they go off on their own.

In addition, these lights are waterproof. I have not thoroughly tested this (why tempt fate?) but it’s encased in plastic and has a rubber gasket (or ring) to prevent water from seeping in, so that you can have peace of mind if you leave them out in the rain overnight.

Note: AAA batteries are not included, so be sure to order some if you don’t have any at home. Everything else is included.

For more information you can find the basket lights at HIAARO’s website here.

Disc Lights

Sometimes disc golfers want to use the discs they trust. That might mean they don’t want to try and find a glow disc that fades, or use a disc with lights built in.

These disc lights from HIAARO, easily attach to the bottom of your disc. Then, you simply press the button and watch the disc light right up (as long as the disc is translucent). Now you can throw and find your disc with ease during night rounds.

It’s as simple as that!

And as far as flight is concerned, there is very minimal effect on the flight (they have a target marked to line up with the center so as not to adversely affect flight.)

Notes: The light color you choose can greatly affect battery life (red lasts least).

These are easy to remove, but I recommend designating a night round disc so you aren’t constantly removing the lights and losing the adhesive properties on the back.

For more information on these disc lights, you can go to the page on their website here.

Beginner Disc Sets

HIAARO sent me their beginner discs to review. They have a driver, a midrange and a putter that all come in the beginner weight ranges of 145 -150 grams.

Having kids and students that play disc golf, I got a lot of use out of these discs and got to put them through a battery of tests by observing kids use them, and trying them out myself.

In short, these discs, which come in a base plastic, are rock solid for kids and beginners and can help beginners find success early so that they are more inclined to continue playing disc golf and eventually graduate to the multitude of discs at their disposal in our game.

"Best Discs for Kids!" written over kid throwing disc.

HIAARO’s Light Weight Disc Set is featured in this post on Best Discs for Kids!

This post highlights some of the very best disc golf discs to select in order to help kids find success and gain interest in our great game!

Check it out here!

And speaking of graduating to discs, HIAARO informs me that they are coming out with their own line of discs so stay tuned for that as well!

Now let’s wrap up and review their basket and other products one last time.

HIAARO Portable Disc Golf Travel Basket – In Summary!

If you are in the market for a portable disc golf travel basket, I highly recommend this HIAARO model!

It has many great features like durability, good disc catching, easy assembly, it’s easy to travel with, it’s light weight and it’s a great price, with very limited downsides.

It’s even got, as a bonus, a greatly reduced chain rattle which makes it easier to putt without worrying about bothering others.

All told, HIAARO has come up with winning travel disc golf basket. I don’t hesitate recommending it and I hope you find as much upside and enjoyment with it as I have!

In addition, their basket lights, disc lights, and beginner disc sets, are a nice quality, and very favorably priced to help make the game more enjoyable at night and for beginners.

With more discs and products on the horizon, HIAARO has some really nice products to check out.
